A maze of alleys, colourful souks, palaces and hidden gardens: the medina of Marrakech can feel intimidating at first. Here is a simple itinerary to discover it in a day, with a few tips to enjoy it with peace of mind.

Morning: the Koutoubia and the souks

Start with the Koutoubia Mosque, whose minaret is the city's great landmark. Its gardens are pleasant early in the morning, before the crowds. The inside of the mosque is open to Muslims only, but the exterior is enough to appreciate its architecture.

Then cross Jemaa el-Fna square, still quiet at this hour, and dive into the souks. Each alley has its speciality: spices, leather, babouche slippers, rugs, lanterns in chiselled metal. Take your time and wander, it is the best way to find the most interesting stalls.

Late morning: the Ben Youssef Madrasa

North of the souks, this former Quranic school is one of the most beautiful monuments in the city: a marble courtyard, zellige tilework, cedar wood and carved stucco. A peaceful spot, ideal for catching your breath after the bustle of the souks.

Lunch: a terrace with a view

Many restaurants in the medina have rooftop terraces. It is the perfect opportunity to try a tagine or a pastilla while looking out over the city's rooftops.

Afternoon: palaces and gardens

Head to the south of the medina to visit the Bahia Palace, with its flower-filled courtyards and painted ceilings. If time allows, the nearby Saadian Tombs are also well worth a visit.

If you prefer greenery, take a taxi to the Majorelle Garden in the Gueliz district, outside the medina. Remember to book your ticket online, as the queue can be long.

Evening: Jemaa el-Fna comes alive

In the late afternoon the square changes completely: food stalls, musicians, storytellers and orange juice sellers. Settle on a café terrace overlooking the square to watch the show at sunset.

Our tips for a relaxed visit

  • Haggle with good humour: it is a tradition, not an ordeal.

  • Politely decline self-appointed "guides" offering to show you the way; an offline map app is all you need.

  • Ask permission before photographing people, especially the performers on the square.

  • In petit taxis, ask for the meter to be switched on or agree on the fare before getting in.

  • Wear comfortable shoes: you will walk a lot, and the alleys can be uneven.

  • Clothing that covers shoulders and knees is appreciated, especially at religious sites.

From Villa Imrine

The medina is an easy day trip from the villa. In the evening, come back to the calm of Villa Imrine and its pool. Milouda, our cook, and Abdel, our caretaker, are there to make your stay easy: discover the included services.
