Around forty kilometres south-west of Marrakech, two contrasting landscapes sit side by side: the Agafay desert, a stretch of ochre, stony hills, and Lake Lalla Takerkoust, a reservoir at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Together they make one of the finest day trips in the region, without the long drive the Sahara requires.

The Agafay desert: a change of scene close to the city

Agafay is not a desert of sand dunes but a plateau of rock and earth, where the silence strikes you as soon as you leave the road. On clear days the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas line the horizon, giving the place a remarkable light, especially late in the day.

Many camps offer half-day or full-day activities:

  • Camel rides, ideal with children.

  • Quad or buggy tours for thrill-seekers.

  • Lunch or dinner in a Berber tent, often with live music.

  • Sunset and stargazing, far from the city lights.

Book ahead if you can, and ask whether transport is included: many operators pick their guests up.

Lake Lalla Takerkoust: a break by the water

This reservoir lake, built in the first half of the 20th century, offers a completely different setting. A few restaurants with terraces line its shores, perfect for lunch facing the mountains. Depending on the season and the operators on site, you can go kayaking, paddleboarding or simply take a walk.

Good to know: the water level varies a lot from year to year and with periods of drought. Check before you go if you are counting on water activities.

How to plan the day

Morning: head to the lake to enjoy the cool air and soft light on the water.

Midday: have lunch at a lakeside restaurant.

Afternoon: drive on to Agafay for an activity, then stay until sunset, the most spectacular moment of the day.

By car, the two sites are easy to combine. Without a vehicle, an organised tour or a private driver is the simplest option.

Our practical tips

  • Bring a jacket: evenings are cool in the desert, especially from November to March.

  • Pack a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, as shade is scarce.

  • Keep some dirhams in cash for small purchases and tips.

  • Closed shoes are recommended for walking on the stony ground.

From Villa Imrine

Agafay and Lake Lalla Takerkoust are easy to combine in a day trip from the villa. In the evening, come back to the calm of Villa Imrine and its pool. Milouda, our cook, and Abdel, our caretaker, are there to make your stay easy: discover the included services.

Frequently asked questions

Is Agafay a sand desert?

No. Agafay is a stony desert of rolling ochre hills. To see large sand dunes you need to travel to the Sahara, several hours' drive away.

What is the best time of day to visit Agafay?

Late afternoon: the light is beautiful and sunset over the Atlas is the most spectacular moment. Bring a jacket, as evenings are cool.

Should I book Agafay activities in advance?

It is recommended, especially for dinners and rides. When booking, ask whether transport is included: many operators pick their guests up.
